Having completed my degree in medicine at Queen's University of Belfast, some 30 years ago, I joined the Northern Ireland surgical rotation and spent time in various surgical specialties before deciding to pursue a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics. I completed a Masters of Philosophy in Perthes' disease (a childhood hip disease) before commencing my Trauma and Orthopaedic training.
Prior to taking up a consultant position, I spent a year in Wrightington Hospital, a renowned upper limb unit in Lancashire, England. This fellowship year was spent with the highly regarded Professor John Stanley and team and I was able to gain experience in cutting edge upper limb surgical techniques.
In 2006 I returned from England and I took up the position of Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon in Altnagelvin Hospital. Over the last 16 years as a Consultant I have gained invaluable experience in my specialty, upper limb surgery, working both in the NHS and the private sector. I was the Clinical Lead for Trauma & Orthopaedics in the Western Trust for almost 8 years, managing the provision of orthopaedic services for the entire Western Trust. I live in Derry with my family and am a keen golfer, cyclist and guitarist in my spare time.
