Treatment Rationale

Many conditions can benefit from conservative treatment measures such as rest, anti-infammatory medication, physiotherapy, splintage and steroid injection.  Failing these options, surgery may be required.  We endeavour to  carry out surgical procedures under local anaesthetic were possible although general anaesthesia may be required for more complex procedures.

  Carpal tunnel decompression

Carpal tunnel decompression is usually a very successful treatment for relieving the pins and needles and pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. It is normally carried out using local anaesthesia.

Trigger finger release can normally relieve all the symptoms of catching and locking seen with this condition. This also can be carried out under local anaesthesia.

Dupuytren's fasciectomy

Faciectomy involves removal of the diseased fascia that results in a contracture of a finger.  Whilst it may not be possible to get a complete correction most patients will achieve a marked improvement.

Base of thumb arthritis can be treated initially with steroid injection and, failing this, a procedure known as trapezeictomy can be carried out. This entails removing a small bone to improve symptoms.
